When Megan Pustetto tried to start a light conversation about online massages, it quickly became extremely frustrating.
The 32-year-old hosts the successful podcast So dramatican equally successful website, and is an expert at starting conversations.
She has also amassed more than 18,000 followers on her personal Instagram and started a huge conversation by sharing her wild experience of body massage in Bali.
Pustetto explained that she went to get a massage somewhere that looked nice and not at all “dodgy.”
It was one of those salons with curtains and false partitions to separate each massage room, meaning that while she had privacy – she could hear everything going on nearby.
She was then stunned to hear “sounds” nearby that she described as “heavy breathing and moaning”.
She finally realized that a sexual act was taking place during a massage because she apologized to a man for being “soft”.
The incident completely shocked her and made her curious if other people had any strange experiences during massage.
“I asked people who get these types of massages to answer my questions about how it works because I was really curious,” she told news.com.au.
“But then I asked people to share their horror massage experiences, just for fun, in case we didn’t get any responses.”
Pustetto said that once she posted the question online and asked her followers to share their “cooked massage” experiences, she got a massive response — and it quickly turned grim.
“Once I started getting these stories, it quickly turned from lighthearted entertainment to actual experiences of sexual assault,” she said.
Some people wrote and shared funny stories, like a masseuse who was weirded out because she had to end her lunch break early to get a massage — and then proceeded to give her client one of the hardest massages of her life.
Another woman said her masseur asked her if she would like some pressure on her feet and she said yes, assuming he was going to rub them.
Instead, he began to “bite the soles” of her feet.
However, mostly people responded and shared stories of sexual assault, harassment or experiences that made them feel uncomfortable.
Someone revealed the time she was getting a massage from a man and the horror she felt when she realized he had an erection and that he kept rubbing his penis against her legs.
Another shared the time she went for a massage and her breasts ended up being fondled, leaving her “shivering”.
Another said she had a masseuse stroke her stomach without consent, saying “some of his clients liked it”.
Pustetto said the theme of the responses “shocked” him because it’s hard to hear how common it was.
“The thing that shocked me the most from hearing other people’s massage horror stories was how common sexual assault was,” she said.
“The number of people who were inappropriately touched or made to feel uncomfortable during a massage was surprising for both women and men.”
Pustetto said it was surprising to find out how many people were made to feel uncomfortable while getting a massage.
“In fact, the number of men who were touched without consent was much higher than I thought it would be,” she added.
“I think a lot of people generalize and assume that most men might like a massage with a happy ending, but that’s not the case at all.”
“Many men said they had been touched without consent and felt uncomfortable in the situation, but were too afraid to say anything or stop the masseuse.
“Many women also said they felt too uncomfortable to say anything and just accepted the inappropriate behaviour, which is really sad.”
